Slegers, geboren en getogen in Helmond, tekent en schildert al vanaf zijn twaalfde jaar. Op zijn veertiende begon hij als huisschilder, terwijl hij daarnaast schilderlessen volgde bij de Brabantse kunstschilder Henk Bies (19282006). Door het ontbreken van een passende vooropleiding kon hij niet worden toegelaten tot de kunstacademie, waardoor hij zich grotendeels als autodidact
