It was selected through a worldwide competition won by weaver Angus MacLeod from Lewis who produced the first commercial quantities in traditional kilt weight in 1993 at Lochcarron Weavers in North Strome

Designed originally in 1934 by the National Association of Woollen Manufacturers as a commemorative Scottish National tartan. In 1998 Lochcarron Mill produced a version of it with an enlarged green square which they call National Millennium.
