The Utrecht born painter Jan van Empel lived and worked his entire life in this city, with the exception of a few years in Paris. After his education at the Art Academy in The Hague, he went there to further his education. In his early oeuvre we see colorful figurative still lifes and figures, later he started painting more abstractly. In doing so, he still saw color as an important means of expression.
