We use food, porn, sex, relationships, buying, and binging with our phones as mood modifiers, as sedatives for deep pain we may not be aware of. We fill with it an internal gap that took root in us early, and we bandage a trauma that caused a rift in language that we could only heal by distracting from it with compulsive behavior. Addiction was our dumb cry, our muffled pain, and our affectionate groaning.
