18th Century Eastern Orthodox Tempera Icon of St. John the Baptist workstation 65" W x 13" HTempera painted icon on wood depicting St. John the Baptist, shown in a traditional pose holding a platter with his severed head a symbolic reference to his martyrdom by beheading. Above him appears Christ, accompanied by a rare depiction of God the Father, rendered in the Biblical description of "a voice without form." The saint's visage is framed by an applied repouss tin halo with vine and floral ornament, a characteristic embellishment of regional
